If the notion of paying for a SIM unlocking service does not appeal to you, going through your carrier is the best alternative because it is free. There is one tiny catch: your carrier will normally have various conditions in place before unlocking the SIM for you. You must be in good standing with your carrier, which means you have no outstanding bills and your phone contract with your carrier has expired.
