HTC One M9 Vs iPhone 6 - Head to Head
Whilst Apple has started to stray from their well worn path to create a more unique device with the iPhone 6, HTC are still keeping true to the One series, and the M9 looks incredibly similar to it’s precursor. However, there are a number of changes, both internally and in the software that make the M9 a notable upgrade from the M8. But how does it compare to Apple’s newest flagship, the iPhone 6? In this comparison, we put each device head to head across various different categories.
Build Quality
You may be shocked to hear me say this, but I never really liked the old Apple iPhones - they just didn’t feel as comfortable in my hand as other devices did. For this reason I was happy to see that the iPhone 6 had a pretty big design overhaul, and it makes the device look absolutely amazing.
The HTC One M9 on the other hand feels a lot more like it’s precursors, but that’s not such a bad thing. The One lineup has always consisted of amazing devices that look and feel gorgeous to hold.
The odd thing is that both the HTC One M9 and the iPhone 6 have quite similar premium looking designs. They are both made of high quality metal, and they are both slick and amazing to hold. The M9 has a few improvements from the M8 which makes it a very great contender against the iPhone 6. If you need instructions to unlock Iphone 6 try it here!
It really does come down to preference, but if you prefer the thinner, more lightweight option then the iPhone 6 will definitely be the one for you.
Display
The HTC One M9 is larger than the iPhone 6 and one reason for this is the larger display size. Whilst the iPhone 6 has a 4.7 inch 750x1334 IPS panel, the HTC One M9 sports a larger 5 inch 1080 x 1920 S-LCD 3 display.
Which is better? Well, there are so many factors to take into consideration. Whilst the M9’s display is larger and has a larger resolution, both devices have very high quality displays. The largest difference is perhaps the brightness and color temperature, and this is where the iPhone 6’s display wins.
For the average user, the differences in display is hardly noticeable though, so if you’re judging each device on display, you should focus on the most apparent element, which is of course the 0.3 inch size difference.
Software
Whilst the iPhone 6 is now running the latest and most up to date version of iOS 8, the HTC One M9 is also running the brand new HTC Sense 7.0 overlay over the latest version of Android.
Once again, it is going to come down to preference over which one you like the look of most, but when it comes to raw functionality, we can’t deny that the M9 is superior. As an Android device at heart, the HTC One M9 comes packed with more tools and features than you’d expect to find on an iPhone.
With that being said, the HTC One M9 doesn’t feel scary to use - there isn’t an abundance of features and gimmicks thrown at your face every time you turn on the screen, and the toned down, color based interface makes it easy for us to navigate through the system.
Internal Hardware
One global rule for all smartphone comparisons is to never make a judgement on what a smartphone’s performance is like based on it’s specs on paper. This is especially true when iPhones have been using less powerful hardware with amazing success for years now.
Both the HTC One M9 and the iPhone 6 are blazingly fast at doing just about anything. Using the interface and browsing through standard web based apps is not going to provide any issues whatsoever for the HTC and Apple made devices.
Benchmarks suggest that both the iPhone 6 and the HTC One M9 are fairly close in terms of raw output, despite the One M9 being powered by an octa core 64 bit processor and 3GB of RAM. For reference, the iPhone 6 only uses a dual core 64 bit processor and 1GB of RAM.
No matter which device you pick, there aren’t going to be any tasks on the corresponding operating system that neither can’t perform effortlessly.
Camera
The camera is of course a pretty big element of smartphones these days, and both the iPhone 6 and the HTC One M9 deliver exceptional results. Whilst the M8 had an UltraPixel camera that just could not compete with other smartphones, the M9 has adopted a much nicer 20 megapixel camera and has opted to put the UltraPixel snapper on the front of the device.
The iPhone 6 on the other hand has an 8 megapixel camera on the rear, but it still performs quite well against the HTC One M9. So what camera is better? This question is incredibly hard to answer, but here are three points worth mentioning.
The detail on the HTC One M9 is better than that of the iPhone 6, but it is not easily noticeable, despite the large difference in megapixels. The iPhone 6 also shoots much better in low lighting, and this is really where the M9 fails to deliver.
To give more credit to the M9, the camera app on the Sense powered handset completely blows the iPhone 6 camera app out of the water. There are just so many more features and options available for avid mobile photographers.
Summary
Both the HTC One M9 and the iPhone 6 are examples of what each manufacturer can do if they put their all into it, and they are both beautifully engineered smartphones. Whilst the HTC One M9 has a larger display and a more featured packed interface, the iPhone 6 has a decent snapper and easily contends with the M9 in every other aspect. Both devices are great, that’s for sure.
