BlackBerry Z10 - Specs and Performance Review
A new Blackberry phone is in town. Blackberry, earlier used to known as Research in Motion, has after a long wait, unleashed its smartphone running on QNX-based OS 10 platform. To bring the eminence back in the market, very much is at stake, after taking into account the extortionate time they have consumed for it.
Certainly, it has been rough job for Blackberry to make an attempt to stand in the crowd which is already bursting with the high end Android Smartphones, Trendy Windows 8 phones and none other than iPhone.
Despite of other facts, Blackberry is determined to make its presence with the use of completely new platform.
So the mobile phone which is honoured to get launched with Blackberry’s latest platform is Blackberry Z10. Its fact sheet is not going to put fear in any of the high-end tried smartphones available in market. The only spotlight for now is concentrated on its OS and its performance.
Design specification:
Anyone will think that the design of the new Blackberry Z10 will be extraordinary since it is meant to show the new platform for the very first time. Alas! It is not the case. The design is low-key and falls when we compare it to some other eye-candy phones, already in market. It has all plastic body which is the main reason why it lacks beauty. It has solid rear side with firm grip due to its rubber casing. It is 0.35” slim and weighs as 4.9 oz.
In today’s world, physical look is very essential to impress the consumer. Eye catching design and features plays very vital role. It helps to stand out of crowd. No single button is placed on its front unlike its Blackberry ancestors. Instead, they are included in the User Interface.
- On the bottom, microphone is placed.
- Just opposite to it is earpiece, proximity sensors along with light, 2 MP front camera and LED notification light.
- On the left side, microUSB port for charging and data connectivity is present. Along with it is microHDMI port for great video-out specification.
- On the contrary side is aluminium volume control keys. In middle of volume keys, there is phone’s volume control key. This key also works as media playback button.
- Power button is placed on the top edge. Beside it, you can find 3.5mm headset jack and microphone.
- Bottom edge has a slash which lets you remove the back cover and works as speaker as well.
- 8MP auto-focus camera with LED flash is placed on the backside.

Display:
It has 4.2 inch LCD screen with resolution of 768 x 1280. It is very sharply designed so that our eyes love it. The colours on the screen are neutral so that you can view the display in the outdoor conditions too, even when sun is present.
Blackberry Z10 doesn’t have Gorilla glass but some other material which feels like plastic. Besides, it is very tough to remove fingerprints and smudges from it.
If nothing is that great then what’s the fuzz around new Blackberry Z10. It’s the latest OS 10 from the Blackberry.
Gestures:
The Homescreen comprises of three panels, which are the app panel, active frame panels and the Blackberry Hub. By releasing the finger from the bottom bezel, one can minimize the on-going app and put it on the Active Frame. By swiping up bottom bezel, you can also view ‘Peek View’. To check out the notification, you need to traverse through the Blackberry Hub.
Honestly, the way Blackberry Z10 handles notification isn’t quite swift, instead it takes too much effort. Besides notifications, the Blackberry Hub handles emails, text messages and missed calls. Swiping down the bezel allows you to do setting of the app which is running. Hence the gestures have replaced the typical menu button.
Processor and memory:
The processor of the Blackberry Z10 is the dual-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus processor which is well equipped with 2GB of RAM. Most of the latest flagship gadgets use this chipset only. Processor’s performance is high and consistent. From basic functions to complex things like gaming and video chats, hardly any sign of lethargy is found.
It is tagged to offer 16 GB internal storage, but allows only 9.9 GB of free space. Fortunately, there is microSD card slot to boost up memory requirement. It can add up up to 32 GB.
Internet and Connectivity options:
Blackberry Z10 is the first Blackberry phone which has 4G LTE connectivity. Web browser of this phone is amazing and can load intense multimedia pages phenomenally. It can easily do zooming and page scrolling in complex pages. Therefore, sites with full of Flash content is handled easily. This smartphone is well equipped with all the connectivity features which are found in most of the smartphones now days. It has GPS, 5GHz 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and mobile hotspot functionality.
Camera and Multimedia:
The camera quality is excellent and you will be able to click some great shots, even on the outdoors. In low lightings, it performs brilliantly capturing every fine detail with the help of LED flash. It also does 1080p video recording which is average.
Music player doesn’t have trendy look and is not as powerful as expected. It is just the usual. Output of music is average. The shock which we got is that Blackberry Z10 is quite awesome when it comes to play, High definition videos. It is one of its kind feelings.
Call Quality:
Call quality at both ends is very clear as well as distinctive. Speakerphone may sometime create some noise but otherwise it works well.
Battery:
The battery life is 10 hours of normal usage. Not high as needed or not less than what’s required.
Results:
We had some really high hopes from this Blackberry gadget. The main attention was on its new platform which hasn’t been much to impress us. If you are already an owner of Android phone, Windows phone or iPhone, you will be compromising with your standard by getting Blackberry Z10. On the contrary if you have been Blackberry user, this switch may be good for you.
