LG G4 vs LG G3

By admin | Published June 29th, 2015

The LG G3 was the best handset LG had ever released, but fast forward a year and we now have the brand new LG G4. As a successor to the G3, it’s easy to assume that the G4 is a far superior handset, but if you owned a LG G3, would it be worthwhile to upgrade to the G4? We’ll be finding an answer to this question in our review below.

Build Quality

At first glance, the LG G4 really doesn’t look much different to the LG G3. However, with a closer look you’ll notice the differences. Firstly, the LG G4 is taller, heavier and thicker than the G3 - it’s basically bigger in every single dimension. Personally it’s still easy to hold and it’s certainly easier to use than other similar sized phablets thanks to the buttons on the back of the device.

You can also get the back plate of the G4 in real leather - this is a great addition that adds a bit more flair to your device and is welcomed by many. If you prefer a sleeker, thinner build, you may actually miss out if you upgrade to the G4. If you need to unlock your LG handset you can check here the lists!

Display

The LG G4 uses a special sounding Quantum Display, but when it comes down to it, both displays are incredibly high quality for a smartphone and it’s hard to say which one is better. If you want to get really serious, various tests will show that the LG G3 display actually has better brightness and color temperature, but it’s barely noticeable.

There are some areas where the LG G4 display is considerably better though. For example, the G4 display can be displayed at a much lower brightness, perfect for using indoors or at night time. You can unlock your LG G3 just follow the instructions here!

Interface

Just like with the LG G3, the G4 has a colorful, simplified interface that’s easy to navigate through. Unfortunately there really weren’t many improvements in this field to make it worth jumping ship from the LG G3. A new lick of paint has been applied to the interface though, and this is a feature you may or may not like, depending on your own personal preferences.

Even though the LG G4 is on Android 5.1 out of the box, the G3 is on 5.0.1, and more updates may be planned for the future.

Performance

Due to some issues with production, the LG G4 doesn’t have the hottest chipset on the block, but it still improves considerably upon the Snapdragon 801 SoC in the G3. To unlock your LG G4 just click here!

The LG G4 uses a Snapdragon 808 SoC - this is a long way behind the 810, but when it comes to raw performance it can still deal with tasks better than the LG G3.

How much better? Benchmark tests show a considerable jump in performance with the Snapdragon 808 - AnTuTu scores around 50,000 on the G4 and 30,000 on the LG G3 for example.

Summary

Is it worth upgrading to the LG G3 from the LG G4? Unless you really want Android 5.1 right now or want to make use of the extra performance power of the G4, there really isn’t that much reason to upgrade to the G4 just yet.

The G4 is a great handset, there’s no doubt about it, but the difference between the G3 just isn’t quite enough to be worth dropping for the G4.
