HTC One X+ vs Samsung Galaxy S III ReviewThe HTC One X is the newcomer to the majestic Android family. Let’s see how it fares when pitted against the Samsung Galaxy S III, the phone that has crossed the 30 million sales mark.

Both devices have big screens and 8 MP cameras. Let’s take a look at all the details to find out which is best suited for you.

Design

Slim and light, both phones have curved designs with edges that are rounded. They are comfortable to hold – as much as devices with screens that are 4.7 inches and 4.8 inches in sizes will allow. The Galaxy S III feels slightly thinner. The One X+ allows for a firmer grip due to its soft-touch back finish.

The S III is not a single body piece. This enables the user to take off the back cover and change the battery or the memory card. The Galaxy S III’s home key is easy to use. Users may find it better than the One X+’s capacitive key. The buttons of both are easily felt and responsive except for the One X+’s volume button which takes time to get used to.

Displays

The screens of both the One X+ and the S III have the same resolution -- S-LCD 2 and resolution of 1280 by 720. The density of One X+ is 312ppi pixel; the S III’s 306 ppi. The screen productions differ quite a bit. The One X+’s LCD is more brilliant than the S III’s AMOLED. The One X’s outdoor visibility is better because of its low reflection.

The Galaxy S III display indoors suffers from typical AMOLED blemishes -- cold or over-drenched colors. The range of colors on the Galaxy S III is wider than that of the NTSC standards, and this results in gaudier colors that the One X+.

Interface, functionality

The additional functions of Samsung stand out. For example there is the Smart Stay facet. It recognizes you as you are looking at the screen and so it stays on. Another function, the Pop Up Play enables the user to see videos even when he is busy with something else. The S Beam allows the user to exchange files with other Samsung users. These are useful additions, like the dual-window which allows the user to divide the screen and use two apps at one go.

The One X+’s Sense UI appears polished and level at all levels. The Galaxy S III’s square shaped icons and the feel of its Nature UX are not good. The options that are personalized like those on the HTC are also huge in comparison to the Nature UX. Another neat option is found in the gallery. It is now a beginning point for stored pictures as well as videos and for albums that the user has uploaded on social networking sites and elsewhere. One X+’s virtual keys stand taller those of the S III which are spaced out.

Processor, memory

One X+’s quad-core Tegra 3 AP37 has 1.7 GHz. It’s favorable when compared to the Galaxy S III’s quad-core Exynos 4412 with 1.4 GHz. The Galaxy’s American version is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU. The One X+’s upgraded Tegra 3 is better. But it heats the device if the load is heavy.  Both have 1 GB of RAM. With the HTC though you can run just 8 apps at one go. There’s a much broader task that runs unabated all the while on the S III. As far as internal memory goes, HTC One X+ is the easy winner due to its 64 GB. Galaxy S III’s basic device has 16 GB.

Internet, connectivity

Both gadgets have their own default browsers. They are good for zooming as well as for scrolling and reflowing text, as they are for panning around. HTC’s is more flexible and easier to use. But there is the hassle of having to reload the tabs every time the user alternates between them. It supports Adobe Flash. There are 100 Mbits LTE variations on carriers which can be hooked to such networks. Otherwise there is HSPA+ connectivity. One X+ offers 42 Mbit/s speeds in theory; there’s 21 Mbit/s in the Galaxy S III. You can switch on all radio networks with both devices.

Camera

The gadgets both sport 8 MP BSI sensors. They also have adjoining LED flash, zero lag in the shutters, incessant shot, HDR, low light as well as Panorama and Macro modes. The interfaces differ. HTC Sense is more user-friendly. The varied menus of the Galaxy S III bury the user.  With HTC One X+ the user can shoot pictures or videos from one screen as well as the identical start screen. The Galaxy S III’s picture quality is far better. The white balancing scheme in the HTC One X+ sometimes gets botched up.

Multimedia

Songs can be categorized but there’s a difference in the functionality. One X+ gives the user access to songs in the interior storage. Galaxy S III too has its Music Hub but it comes as an individual app. It offers lot of sound effects and options for equalizer. HTC has just the Beats Audio preference. The sound difference can be easily noticed. The loudspeakers in both the phones provide good strength and have clarity. The One X+ sounds slightly fuller.

S III video playback plays everything, but the video system but on the One X+ the user has to download 1080 DivX/Xvid videos from its Play Store. Samsung offers the Pop Up Play utility too. This allows the user to keep the player fixed in a window above all else, which will enable the user to see video and chat at the same time.

Call quality

The Galaxy’s is of stellar quality. The earpiece and the microphones are great, unlike the One X+ where voices emerge with a hissing sound at the far end. Both phones weed out nearby sounds nicely as the user talks.

Battery

The gadgets have 2, 100 mAh batteries capacity. This is necessary for their big screens and quick processors. One X+ has not promised talk time still, only up to half of that in the One X.  The talk time in the S III is an excellent 1.6 hrs in 3G mode. One X+ holds the advantage in battery duration while browsing.

Conclusion

HTC has pulled off a coup of sorts in the Android battles by raising the level of its flagship and endowing it with a huge 64 GB storage. Both the Galaxy S III and the One X+ are near to each other in the processing. The advantage in the chassis and the display as well as the storage goes to the One X+. The Galaxy S III has something to boast about in these areas due to its flexibility and its display. Where it scores over the One X+ is in the camera.

It’s better in both pics and quality of video, especially in indoor shooting. The HTC Sense 4+ software is more uniform, its browser more useful and its Nature UX has more functions. Eventually the price factor will come into play for potential buyers of these great gadgets. The cost should help them make up their minds which one they will finally purchase.
