Sony Xperia Z2 versus HTC One (M8)
The most recent smartphone revealed by Sony is the new Xperia Z2, the upgraded kin of the Xperia Z1, a highly competitive gadget that sports an improved screen, processor and memory and a more complex camera also. You can now Unlock The Sony Xperia Z2 here.
In order to show it at its best capacity, it would be very interesting to compare with another smartphone which is very similar, the HTC One M8. Putting them together will highlight the amazing experience that you can have using either of the two phones.
Design
The appearance of the Z2 is very exquisite, just like the Z1 was also, with flat glass plates both on the front and back of the gadget, side metal rims and flaps that cover the ports, giving it an amazing waterproof characteristic.
Choosing between the Z2 and the HTC One is just a matter of taste, as both of them have amazing design and high resistance. The M8 has its all-metal appearance that was launched by its predecessor and although it’s not waterproof as the Z2, it has an IR blaster feature that will allow you to control TVs or stereo music players.
The dimensions of the two gadgets are quite generous, the Z2 being 5.78 inches tall and 2.89 inches wide and the HTC One M8 having of 5.76 x 2.78 inches of length and width. The weight of the two is also quite the same, the Z2 adding 3 grams more to the 160 of the HTC.
In addition to their design traits, it’s also worth noting that both flagship smartphones have front-facing speakers that are great for movies and music. It’s hard to tell if one is more efficient than the other in this matter.
Display
The quality of the display seemed to be a problem until now with Sony, compared to other phone brands, but with the Xperia Z2 it has clearly disappeared. The Z2 5.2”IPS display is clearly the best for Sony so far, with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, vivid colors, amazing viewing angles and an extra X-Reality feature for photos and videos.
I f we look at the HTC One, the difference in display size is really small, of only 0.2”, which is barely noticeable, while the quality and accuracy of the images are employed by a different type of technology, called S-LCD 3. The feeling of how amazing it looks is the same here as in the Z2, so it remains to be seen if any of the two will be differentiated as better than the other.
Performance
Both smart phones are powered by the same processor: the Qualcomm SoC Snapdragon 801 which has a speed of 2.3 GHz and Adreno 330 graphics. The processor is clearly one of the best of the moment, so having it on both phones it will make them even harder to compare.
Regarding RAM memory, this time the Sony Xperia has an advantage, topping the HTC one with a DDR3 RAM of 3GB instead of a DDR2 of 2 GB.
Both phones will be coming with a microSD card and 16 GB of in-built memory, while the HTC one will also have a 32GB version.
Camera
Sony brought to its new flagship a camera similar to the one of the previous model, with 20.7MP, a 1/2.3” CMOS sensor with 1.1-micron pixels and Sony G Lens optics. It also features possibilities of shooting video in slow motion and several special effects, as well as a Background Defocus extra feature.
In what concerns the HTC M8, its camera features are quite unique, with two cameras instead of one, paired together for depth effects or for shifting the focus point in your pictures. In addition to this, it also has a 5MP front-facing camera for high quality selfies.
Interface
Although both smart phones have the Android KitKat 4.4 running as their interface, the customizations of the brands are obvious. Sony went for a more simplistic look and a smooth and clear interface, with colors that change and an inbuilt set of useful apps.
On the other hand, HTC’s UI clearly stands out as having a different and original appearance, named Sense 6.0, with cartoon-like widgets and icons and a set of unique gestures.
In conclusion, it’s clear that Sony has worked hard improving its technology and put forward a gadget that competes for number one in the Android smart phone hierarchy of 2014, while HTC kept its consistency in quality and added a bit more to the features of its previous flagships into the new HTC One M8.
