LG Optimus 4X HD vs Samsung Galaxy Note II

Review LG Optimus 4X HD vs Samsung Galaxy Note IIThe LG Optimus 4X HD is the finest Android handset from LG as we wait for the Optimus G to appear. It qualifies to be compared with Samsung’s best, the Galaxy Note II. Both are equipped with big screens, big processors as well as 8MP cameras. The Note II however, is not meant for all due to its huge size. The Optimus 4X HD is more regular.

So which will you prefer? We’ll help you in your choice.

Design:

Samsung has brought the stylus back to life and has given it the screen which matches with the initial Note. The handset remains large, but since the narrowed down back and body reminds the user of a gigantic Galaxy S III, the handset is also easier to use than its original. The Optimus 4X HD is thus a compact large screen handset that is quite comfortable to handle with one hand. It is also, arguably, the best looking LG Android handset yet.

Displays:

The LG Optimus 4X HD’s 4.7 inches IPS LCD screen is beautiful. Its resolution of 1280x720, its wide screening angles, precise colors and brightness make it a great handset.

The Note II’s 5.5 inches is not as brilliant, which means that it has a somewhat bad outdoor visibility. Its absolute size along with its high contrast and drenched colors that are typical of AMOLED, make it a delight to behold also.

Interface, functionality:

The show on Note II is run by the newest Android Jelly Bean, draped with Samsung’s Nature UX interface. Optimus 4X HD has ICS and LG’s own UI above. While it is yet to be known if and when 4X HD gets updated to Android 4.1, the existence of Jelly Bean on Note II means it is more sturdy as far as software goes.

Processor, memory:

The Tegra 3 processor in the Optimus 4X HD is strudier than the Exynos 4412 in Note II and as far power usage and heat generated goes, Samsung’s handset is superior to the LG piece.

The 2 GB of RAM in Note II – twice that in the 4X HD – help its multitasking power even more. Both boast of a minimum of 16 GB memory and both give microSD memory card functions.

Internet and connectivity:

The browsers in both are speedy and so the user won’t have any complaints on this score in either of the phones.

The Optimus 4X HD has full Adobe Flash backing but this is balanced by the Jelly Bean on Note II.

Both handsets are fitted with 4G HSPA+ radios. In the US, Samsung’s Note II has an LTE baseband also. Both devices have Bluetooth 4.0, FM radio and DLNA, A-GPS and Wi-Fi along with NFC.

Camera:

Samsung Note II’s camera interface is slightly more varied in its functions than the 4X HD’s. There are some modes that the LG doesn’t have. For example, the macro light regimes.

Looking inside, things worsen for the Optimus 4X HD. There is more noise than Note II samples, irregular exposure and dull color across the photos as the light dims.

In both handsets the 4X HD autofocus strays frequently and is quite slower to center than Note II in the still shots also.

Multimedia:

Samsung’s monster piece is helped by the size of its screen, in both the pictures and the videos. The splitting of the screen is faster for navigation. Picture editing can be done in both handsets from the gallery itself. However, Note II has better options, along with the cropping and annotation that the stylus can accomplish.

Both music players give categorization of tunes and preset equalizers, but the Note’s interface is a bit more refined and the options to louden the sound more comfortable to reach. The Note II’s loudspeaker produces a clean sound but on the Optimus 4X HD it’s tinny in comparison.

The 1080 def video is present in both handsets but the Note II’s bigger screen and its saturated colors result in a far more pleasurable experience.

Call quality:

The voice quality in Note II’s earpiece is undoubtedly superior. It is robust and clean, while with the 4X HD you can at times experience problems listening to the other party, especially when the environment is noisy. Samsung’s microphones also do a finer job when putting voices on the ether. In the Optimus device it is a bit distorted. Both are equipped with dual mics that helps in noise cancellation.

Battery:

The Optimus 4X HD’s battery is smaller -- 2,150 mAh – while the Note II has a 3,100 mAh. So the latter can give some 11 hrs talk time while on 3G. The Note II allows 16 hrs. LG’s video playback is some six hrs on Optimus 4X HD, while Note II can achieve twice that.

Conclusion:

Thus it isn’t such a surprise that a standard Android app announced in February is comfortably beaten by another much heralded 6 months on. But we must note that Note II is better in many ways. It is more commanding, has more varied interface functions. Besides,  the options that the stylus can bring, can’t be repeated on Optimus 4X HD. Samsung’s phone features the latest Android, while 4X HD which has a Tegra 3 processor, seems behind the times. Additionally, as you watch that neat 5.5 inches display and as you learn how to reach for the stylus for many tasks, it’s hard to put down. But both handsets are standard Android pieces.

They will not disappoint the user with their trendy, trim body. The 4X HD may be more comfortable for some who can’t carry the supersized Note II around. Also, LG's handset costs much less than the Note II.
