Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Review

By admin | Published September 13th, 2015

The Galaxy S6 Edge Plus is one of the latest smartphones by Samsung. It takes the size seen in smartphones like the Galaxy Note 5 and the curved edges found on the Galaxy S6 Edge and merges them into one single device.

The end result is quite spectacular. Read more about the S6 Edge Plus and our detailed thoughts on it below.

Build Quality

This is obviously the area that is going to get the most attention for the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. Samsung really outdid themselves with their redesign of the S6 and the S6 Edge, and the design architecture has been lent for use on the Edge Plus as well.

Despite looking slightly more stretched out than the standard Edge smartphone, the Edge Plus still looks and feels as good quality as the original device it has been based upon.

The dual curve display which extends to both sides of the smartphone are also more useful now that their size has been increased lengthways.

It looks great, it feels great and it’s a step in the right direction for Samsung, even if they have had to make the sacrifice of losing the removable battery and SD card slot in the process.

Display

As you could imagine, the display on the S6 Edge Plus is also another area worth putting a good mention towards.

The display on the Plus is obviously larger than the standard S6 Edge but Samsung haven’t skipped out on quality.

The display is actually more similar to the Note 5 in terms of raw specs, although it does have the dual curve display as well. The screen sits at 5.7 inches and has a resolution of 2560 x 1440 - this gives the device a 538ppi.

As usual, the display on the Edge 6 Plus shows that Samsung knows how to do smartphones right. It’s colors are extremely accurate and the brightness is also superb.

Contrast is also amongst the best smartphones available today. Samsung have done a great job once again with the Super AMOLED on the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus.

Software

So this is actually the first time Samsung have released a high tier phablet smartphone that isn’t part of the Note lineup. The result is a smartphone that has the high specs and large display you’d expect, without the S Pen and Note software functionality. If you’re not a fan of the whole S Pen concept then the Edge Plus could be a good alternative for all you phablet lovers out there.

With that being said, the device won’t come at you any cheaper, as the dual curve display still needs to be taken into consideration.

We’ve had no complaints with TouchWiz in Samsung’s latest 2015 lineup - they have finally got the right blend of simple and extensive functionality by creating a nice looking UX that is easy to navigate whilst storing more of the advanced functions deep within the settings menu.

Hardware

Samsung have not skipped out on the specs in anyway whatsoever with the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. The device is capable of doing anything Android could ever put on the table and then some. The device also has a decently sized 3,000mAh battery that can be charged very quickly with Samsung’s quick charge technology.

Below is a specification summary

●    5.7" QHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) Super AMOLED display with dual-curve design
●    64-bit Exynos 7420 SoC (quad 2.1GHz & quad 1.5GHz)
●    Mali-T760MP8 GPU
●    4GB RAM, 32/64GB memory
●    16MP camera
●    5MP front-facing camera
●    Android 5.1.1 Lollipop with TouchWiz UX
●    3,000mAh non-removable battery
●    Fingerprint scanner
●    Heart-rate monitor

Conclusion

So there we have it, the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus is the new phablet on the block and it’s a nice alternative for those that would otherwise go for the Note 5. Specifications between the two phablet devices are similar, but the end user experience will be quite a lot different due to the S Pen on one and the dual curve display on the other. Stacked up against other, non-Samsung devices makes the S6 Edge Plus look like a beast, although the premium price point does weigh against that aspect.
