Sony Xperia Z5 Compact Review
The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact has recently been released alongside the standard Z5 and the new Z5 Premium. Out of the three devices, the Compact is considered the cheapest, but that doesn’t mean it’s a low end device. In fact, despite the size, the Compact can easily compete against other top tier handsets.
Build Quality
Sony has always been very particular about the designs of their smartphones - they have tried very hard to create symmetrical smartphones that follow a very uniform design language. The Xperia Z5 Compact is no different from this, and in fact it now has a design that looks even more similar from all angles.
Perhaps the Xperia Z5 Compact’s design may be a bit too simple for your eyes - this is especially the case when we’ve seen smartphone greats like the S6 Edge and the LG G4 released in 2015, which both look absolutely stunning.
The truth is though, in it’s simplicity, the Z5 Compact has found a higher level of comfort. Thanks to the small size, using the Compact is incredibly easy for hands of all sizes - it’s smooth edges and symmetrical design also make it easy to hold and use from absolutely any angle.
Display
Being a small device, it’s expected that the display will be a weak point of the Xperia Z5 Compact. When looking at the specs, the Z5 Compact does have a smaller display than normal, that’s for sure, but it still looks great. At 4.6 inches, a lower resolution display isn’t too bad, so 720x1280 on the Z5 Compact looks nice. Sony has also put a lot of their own display technology into the Z5 Compact, which helps to boast some nice contrast and some accurate color representation.
At 323ppi though, the resolution is a little lacking, but considering Apple has managed to get away with having a low ppi for so long before changing up things with the iPhone 6, there’s no reason why the Xperia Z5 Compact can’t get away with it. Software
You could be fooled to think that the Xperia Z5 Compact is running stock Android Lollipop. Without a closer look, the influence of the Xperia interface is hard to spot. There are some included Xperia UI tweaks that do make a difference though.
There is a certain Xperia color scheme used across the board for starters, and some apps have their own Xperia style designs, although everything has adopted some Material Design influence as well. You can unlock your sony xperia handset just visit here!
From the surface, it really just feels like a slightly reskinned stock experience, but underneath the hood there are a number of cool software features, including STAMINA mode which can be used to save battery life and Small apps which can be used to access your most used apps quickly.
Hardware
So despite the drop in display size, the Xperia Z5 Compact has a very nice hardware offering. When compared to other flagship devices, the Compact performs spectacularly. In fact, the smaller display size actually lends itself to having smoother performance in some areas, especially when rendering 3D applications, because there are less pixels to push.
Of course the Samsung Galaxy S6 is still a beast of a smartphone, and some new additions like the OnePlus 2 and Huawei Honor 6 are providing better benchmark results in some areas, but everything else is performing worse than the Z5 Compact.
In most real world examples, performance differences aren’t really going to be noticeable, but it’s great to see there’s so much power inside this little Sony device.
Here are the specs.
