Samsung Galaxy Grand ReviewOverview:

When the 5 inch screens are all rage, the Samsung Galaxy Grand is all set to gratify every probable need, which is not heavy on pocket too, in the range of smartphones.  If you wish to own big screen at affordable price, the Galaxy Grand is certainly a choice to consider.

Other than huge display, the Grand doesn’t comprehend much speciality, distinctive from other midrange smartphones of Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy Grand I9082:

As predicted, the Grand is not the quite compact device which is available. At 143.5 x 76.9 x 9.6mm, it isn’t the skinniest 5 incher we’ve held, but it does feel and hold graciously well in the hands. It is pleasure to see that Samsung has managed to retain width below 10mm. If you want the weight factor, it is 162g, which is fairly decent for the gadget of this type.

Design and build quality

The design of Grand is taken after the Galaxy S III and the huge screen guarantees that is becomes tough to distinguish it from the Galaxy Note II. The construction of the Grand is almost same as the other Galaxy products though their ore some minor differences.Plastic body may happen to slip but we just presume that it is part of Samsung’s cost-cutting steps.

Display

In the Samsung Galaxy Grand, there is 5” capacitive touchscreen display of 480 x 480 pixels resolution. The negative side along with low resolution is the low density of pixels which is 187 ppi to be precise.

The Image Quality of the Galaxy Grand

The harsh fact is that there is not usage of any special technology which affects to the standard of the image too. Great contrast ratio, along with proper viewing angles which are usually present in AMOLED displays is missing. The on-screen crispness which is commonly found in 5 inchers with HD resolution also lacks.Overall, the display makes us to wish more, specifically, when it is easy to spot the tiniest pixels.

In the section of midrange phones, Grand tries to offer quite well and make up for the dull picture quality. For some people it is definitely a sweet deal while others always have an option of Samsung Galaxy S II duo.

Controls and handling

The general designing of the controls of the Samsung Galaxy Grand is just like most of the Samsung phones.

  • Menu & Back Keys underneath the screen, either sides of the home button
  • Above the display, there is 2MP front camera, earpiece and sensors. Front camera allows you to make video calls.
  • At the top, there is 3.5mm headset jack.
  • The microUSB port and mouthpiece are situated at the bottom. MHL is supported by microUSB port for the HD video output.
  • Left side of the lean, there are volume adjustment key while on right side power/lock key is symmetrically positioned.
  • At the backside, you will find 8MP camera lens along with LED flash and loudspeaker grill.

The back lid is very simple to remove and fits quite appropriately. On opening the battery cover, you get the two slots for the SIM cards along with microSD card slot. Hot-swap is not possible in the Grand because you need to remove the 2100 mAh battery for that. Though the Grand is large enough, one can use it perfectly if intended to use two hands simultaneously otherwise it may slip from the hand.

Processor at its best

Android 4.1.2 Jelly bean is used in the Samsung Galaxy Grand which is equipped with the latest TouchWiz launcher, dubbed Nature UX. The user interface is quite alike to the Galaxy S III mini as well as Galaxy S II Plus which is not surprising at all, given the fact that they all run on the similar OS version along with screen resolution.

  • The lock-screen is usual tap and drag to any direction to unlock. There are several other unlock features such as motion, voice and face.
  •  Five custom shortcuts are available at the bottom of home-screen. One is by default, for appdrawer and other four shortcuts can be set for anything or folder.  Notification area is also located at the top of the screen which can be dragged down.

Task manager

Non-arguably, the dual-SIM interface is the best feature of the Galaxy Grand which is not supported by many other devices. It will allow you to choose which SIM card you want to use for calls and the networking services. From the notification area, one can easily switch between two SIM cards.

Music player with SoundAlive

Just like other Galaxy smartphones, the Galaxy Grand operates on same TouchWiz-ed audio player. It also has the equalizer in addition to sound-enhancing features of SoundAlive technology. The music player can rate the song using the Music Square option. You can put your palm on the screen to pause the playback or position the phone face down to mute the music. The Grand is DLNA-enabled so that using your Wi-Fi; you can easily play unlimited number of tracks.

Highlyaccomplished video player

Gradually, Samsung has become one of the best when it comes to playback of video, including the Galaxy Grand. Multiple modes such as list, grid, folders and nearby devices are offered to enhance the viewing pleasure of user. In the Grand, there is an option of Pop up play so that video floats in a small window, allowing user to access other apps simultaneously. With the pinch-zoom, size of window can be adjusted.

FM Radio with broadcast recording and RDS

FM Radio of the Grand is embellished with RDS. Interface is quite easy which allows tuning dial and user can save up to 12 favourite stations. Option to play on loudspeaker is present but headset is still requires to work as antenna. Facility to record radio broadcast is also present.

Great 8MP camera

8MP camera is nevertheless a great feature in the bag of the Galaxy Grand. With the 8MP camera, pictures of maximum resolution 3264 x 2448 pixels can be captured. LED flash is given to be used in the low lighting conditions. Interface is not much different than Galaxy S III. Shortcuts to the gallery app, Settings, Camera mode, all are present on the screen itself.

What we have to say?

At this point, whether one likes it or not, the Galaxy Grand doesn’t stand as per the expectations. If you really need 5” screen phone and don’t wish to spend few extra bucks or you require huge screen phone with two SIM slots then the verdict goes in the favour of the Galaxy Grand.

Along with the size fact, remember that the display may make you crave for something more. The picture quality is not bad but it’s not even of top notch. Samsung’s Galaxy Note, however offers all the functionality which the Grand has to offer, but unquestionably with some better features and expensive rate.

In a summary, if you are looking for the generous screen with high-end software package, along with the dual-SIM support, and want the mid-range price, the Galaxy Grand is definitely your pick. Conversely, if your options are not favoured, your search is still on.
