Samsung Galaxy S5 versus HTC One (M8)
Although they haven’t been officially released yet, these two flagship smartphones of 2014 will surely compete for being the most desired gadgets of the year. No matter if the Samsung Galaxy S5 is clearly a much disputed and waited phone and many passionate of the brand will rush to buy it once it will be out, the HTC One M8 is clearly on the list of best competitors and it will offer a hard time to the Korean company. Let’s compare some of the characteristics of the two gadgets and see how they stand.
Design
Although Samsung has kept a constant line in what concerns the appearance of the phone, this time they decided to change things a little bit and made a perforated back plate in different soft colors and matte finish, which gives an interesting look to the phone.
However, in spite of the redesign, HTC clearly scores higher in this aspect because of its all-metal case and brushed finish.
In what concerns dimensions and weight, Samsung managed to pull out the lighter gadget with only 8.1 mm thickness and 145 grams, while the HTC has 9.35 mm and 160 grams.
A couple of things that the S5 has on top of the One M8 are the waterproof and dustproof characteristic and also the fingerprint sensor, things which might be very appealing for lots of buyers and thus add up to the phone’s overall score.
But wait a second! The HTC also has something that the Samsung doesn’t have: a pair of BoomSound speakers which will surely delight the ears of music fans.
Display
Both smartphones come with a 1080 by 1920-pixel display, which is a high definition resolution that is already more than our eyes can detect on such small devices, so having more than this would be clearly too much.
About the dimensions of the screen, the two stand very close to each other, with only 0.1 inches difference in favor of the Samsung, which has a 441 ppi pixel density, while the HTC One has only 432 ppi.
What makes the difference between the two, however, is the Super AMOLED display of the S5 which offers extremely vivid colors and very good viewing angles, while the HTC One only has a LCD 3 display.
Processor
The Snapdragon 801 SoC is clearly the most powerful processor on the market and will be featured in both the phones, so there is no difference in this respect.
In what concerns the CPU, however, it seems that the S5 will be on the top again, with a 2.5 GHz unit, versus a 2.3 GHz CPU for the HTC One.
The RAM (2GB) and internal memory (16 or 32 GB) will be the same for both, so no reason to compare and contrast here.
Camera
Samsung has a tradition for high quality cameras and the S5 won’t change it, offering a 16MP with HDR mode and a highly speedy auto-focus and real time preview.
The HTC One, on the other hand, has an unconventional Duo Camera which allows special effects and post-adjustment of focus, something which actually the Samsung Galaxy S5 also has, so it remains to be seen which one performs best.
Taking all these into consideration but also being aware of the fact that the two flagship smartphones haven’t been released on the market yet, we hope that holding them in our hands and observing the experience will make it easier to decide which one is best.
