Talking about size, the Galaxy S5 is a bit lighter and smaller, with 42 x 72.5 x 8.1mm and 145g, compared to the 146.8 x 73.3 x 8.2mm and 163g of the Z2. The screen of the Z2 is only 0.1” larger than the S5’s 5.1”. To get unlocked your Samsung Galxy S5 please click here.
Water and dust resistance is different at the two gadgets, the Sony having an IP67 rating, which means that no dust goes inside the phone and that it can be kept under water less than 1 meter deep for half an hour.
The Samsung has an IP58 rating, which means that it is worse at dust proofing but better at water proofing.
Display
Both smartphone have trademark displays on show from their manufacturer: the Super AMOLED from Samsung and the Triluminos and X-Reality features on the Sony.
After analyzing the two displays, it seems that the S5’s 5.1” screen with 1080p and 432ppi has a lower sharpness, contrast and viewing angles than the Z2, but performs better in the sunlight. However, these differences are very slight and hard to notice until placing the two gadgets side by side.
Battery life
When talking about battery life, it seems that the Z2 has a larger 3200mAh battery as opposed to the 2800mAh one of the S5, summing up 14% more battery life and a total of 89 hours of speaking for the Sony.
Interface
Both smartphone have the same Android 4.4.2 KitKat adapted to the characteristics of each company. The most attractive feature of the Samsung UI is the fingerprint sensor located in the home key, sensor which keeps your phone locked and your media under private mode, while Sony has a lockscreen very close to the vanilla screen of Android that also features widgets.
Regarding default apps, Sony has a news reader called “My Magazine” on the home pane, while the Samsung has “Socialife”, an app that merges Twitter, Facebook and other news sources.
One very cool feature of the Samsung UI is Multi Window, which allows you to use two apps at the same time in split screen, being able to copy-paste from one to the other or use a screenshot from one of them into the other.
The equivalent of this feature for Sony is called “Small Apps” and consists in having multiple small windows open on the screen, not only two.
Performance
Although both gadgets have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and are using 1080p screens, there are differences between their performance rates and that is because the processor of the S5 is clocked at 2.5GHz, while the Z2 processor is at 2.3GHz.
The differences between the two clockspeeds are unnoticeable, but the 3GB of RAM offered by the Sony clearly offers it an advantage, despite the lower processing speed.
Camera
When comparing the two cameras it seems that the Samsung is the winner, due to its clear shots and good behavior in the darkness, with the flash on. Despite its 20MP sensor, the Sony takes lower quality shots in normal mode but performs better with the 8MP Superior Auto function.
In conclusion, both the Sony Zperia Z2 and the Samsung Galaxy S5 are the best gadgets that have been produced by their manufacturers and it is clear that improvements in technology are coming faster and faster from year to year.
Both in hardware and software, these two smartphones demonstrate the immense capabilities of such small gadgets and raise our expectations for the future. You can unlock your smartphone here!
